While some locals satisfy cravings for cheap, fast Mexican food at chain restaurants, others feed the beast at locally-owned burrito and taco restaurant The Whole Enchilada. Though you can see the cooks behind a glass partition putting together burritos at high speed, the bright yellow-walled taco and burrito shop has a slow-paced vibe and serves its customers with a little extra care. Your order is delivered to your table, whether you sit inside at a high top or booth or outside at the picnic tables in the fenced-in front patio. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE
Almost everything on the menu, from the Hasselhoff taco basket to the black tiger shrimp burrito, falls between $6 and $9 and comes with chips and access to the salsa bar. Items rarely found in fast-food joints like mahi-mahi, shrimp and tofu make appearances on the menu, and fixins go beyond burrito basics with sliced avocado, caramelized onions, fire roasted peppers and cabbage. Some folks pop in and out of the shop in a hurry, but it's just as common to see people of all ages hang around for an hour or so. Upbeat background music, which ranges from Sublime to Phoenix and pretty much whatever else the cool kids are listening to these days, adds a touch of youth culture to the atmosphere. The Whole Enchilada certainly works well for a hurried weekday lunch spot, but its atmosphere suggests a leisurely Saturday afternoon. 4115 N. Federal Hwy., 954-561-4040, twefreshmex.com.
